Hariclia Michailidou CV
Bio
Hariclia Michailidou was born in Greece, where she completed her secondary education with top distinction in the sciences — consistently ranked among the finest students in her school. Though the arts were always present in her life, it was the sciences that first claimed her mind and imagination at the time.
Drawn by a deep curiosity for learning, she made the choice to leave Greece and travel to Belgium to study architecture and art at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and the Royal Academy of Architecture, and at the Institute Saint Luc of Architecture and Institute Saint Luc of Fine Arts in Liège Belgium. Later moved to the USA and continued to study Architecture a Pratt Institute in New York City. She excelled in every art class — achieving perfect scores — yet her focus remained firmly rooted in the artistic side of architecture, the poetry of space and the sculpting of form.
After completing her studies, she pursued a career in architecture from 1983 to 1999 where she learned to use computers, which experience served her to start her digital work later on. During the last years of work, because of health reasons she was home often and she began quietly returning to painting — watercolor sketching alone at home. Then, in 1999, her physical condition worsened and brought her professional life totally to a halt. Confined largely to home, she turned more and more to what had always been waiting for her: art. It seems as if life forced her towards painting, a blessing that she did not recognize earlier, or perhaps simply it was the trajectory she was destined to follow, she tells.
What followed was a long and solitary season of creation — fifteen to twenty years spent almost entirely alone, filling sketchbook after sketchbook, exploring watercolors, perfecting them, and later scanned them into the computer and with the advantages of the computer she started the journey of her digital work, developing a visual language that was entirely her own. This was her second beginning. Out of stillness, a body of work emerged: cosmic, abstract, deeply interior — art born from isolation and transformed into something cosmic and luminous. It was not the architectural but the cosmic space she was sculpting now, in her “Poetics of Space”.
Those years were very much an experience from stillness to spirituality from terrestrial to celestial. Very much like from a nightmare fear wake you up, likewise while awake if you experience the same fear you can wake up into another reality far more enchanting, joyful and truly beautiful. That reality of infinity, though indescribable, tries to paint for many years and wishes to share it with others now.
Today, Hariclia Michailidou is recognized internationally mostly as a digital abstract artist, exhibiting widely across galleries in New York, Europe, Canada, Australia, and beyond. Her large number of series into the universe have brought her to major art fairs, curated exhibitions, and international competitions, earning awards, honorary mentions, and features in leading art publications.
